Five Minute Friday: Beauty

Lisa-Jo’s topic for today’s Five Minute Friday is “Beauty.”

You know the drill: five minutes, no editing.

Here I go.

**************************

Beauty.

Such a small word. And  yet, for a girl, it seems to be one of the most important words in our life. We long to be beautiful; and sometimes strive for this (or the perfection of beauty, rather) to the point of danger.

Why is it so important?

I can’t give an answer in words. I can only look around and notice the summer flowers, the sunsets, the loveliness of a smile – and know that it is important, it is redemptive. Beauty shows a part of God, shows what the world was meant to be. It’s a quiet protest of the darkness that surrounds us.

And I think that hidden in our desire to be beautiful, to be found beautiful, is a desire to bring something of importance to the world. Something valuable, something redemptive that points to the real Redemption and the beauty that is to come.

“I’d love to bring some little joy or happy thought that wouldn’t have existed if I hadn’t been born,” Anne Shirley dreams in Anne of the Island.

I would love that, too.

And I’m starting to learn to see and know in my heart what we all know in our heads: that physical beauty isn’t anywhere near the most important part; that the real beauty is in being, in being a person who sprinkles those joys and happy thoughts in other’s lives, a person at peace and rest who gives others the freedom to be at peace and loved, too. For who they are and the beauty they bring.

I love, love, love this post. Both for the truth you speak in it and for the poetry you weave with each word.

This is just precious. And so true. Your last few sentences reminds me of my husband. He’s taught me so much about what it means to be good and whole and peaceful. Those are bits of beauty that can never be bought. 😉 (visiting via Mama Gypsy)

You are a lovely writer! I like the way you express yourself and the message you carry today. Be-ing. Why is it so hard for us who are called human be-ings? I know the world at large so to speak thinks in do-ing more than in be-ing. Thanks for reminding ‘to be’.

Thank you for this, Fenny! So true – we are called “be-ings” but are told that we must always be “do-ing”, our worth (and beauty?) revolves around what we do – which is simply not true!! Thanks for visiting 🙂
