Five Minute Friday: Grateful

July 8, 2011 at 7:52 pm 4 comments

It’s been a long time since I’ve done one of these! But five minutes and a prompt is about all I can manage tonight.

Here we go, no editing allowed! (And props to Lisa-Jo for this meme!)

“Grateful.”

That’s it. Such a small word. And so much to say in response to it. What is gratitude, anyway?

I’m too tired for word dissections or philosophical ponderings. But all I can say is – tonight my heart is full.

I think about the little things, the list of “thankfuls” I was helping Julia make last night. While she painstakingly wrote “mother” and “father”, the words tumbled out of my mouth at about ninety miles an hour. “Color! Music! Letters! Flowers! Friends!”

Today, I’m especially grateful for the little arms that wrap around my legs. For friends, who genuinely want to be a part of my life and make a real effort to do so. For rainy days where I can cock my umbrella over my shoulder and twirl it and pretend to be Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds and not care what others think. Grateful for internships and cities and wacky facebook conversations.

For books. Words. Stories.

I’m grateful for a God who is bigger than I am, bigger than I can imagine, and big enough to turn everything wrong in this world into right.

I’m grateful for pretty things, for a mother who laughs and a father who lets me know everyday that he loves me and cares for me. That love and affirmation is an incredible gift, and I don’t take it lightly.

I’m thankful for a big sister. Who loves me dearly, is always there for me (and especially when I feel like a train wreck), and lets me be me. Even if that means belting out “Popular” when we’re driving.

I’m grateful for those I call sisters.

I’m grateful for stars. And pasta. And cars and fresh bread and trains and…my time’s up.

I pray that I learn to be ever more grateful…to cherish the gifts even more than I do.

And I am grateful to have a friend like you who lets me call and talks at 95mph about my day and gets just as excited as I am 🙂

I loved this so much – what you said and such, that I did it tonight on my blog as well (with a different word). 🙂
