smile. it makes people wonder what you’re up to.

I thought of that line today as I walked from work to the train station. I was inexplicably grinning. The day was breathtakingly beautiful, the walk was pleasant, and my feet didn’t hurt. And I was singing to myself. Softly, but audibly, because that’s what I do when I walk.

I wonder how absurd people thought me. Or if they did, indeed, wonder what impish ideas were running around in my head.

The entrance to the train station is right next to the dock on a (rather ugly) river. Well, it’s pretty if you’re not to close and the sun is glinting off it the right way. So I wandered down to kill some time, and then ran back up all the stairs, just because I could. And because I always run up the stairs. This may burn an entire extra calorie, but it also causes people to laugh at me. Or makes me annoyed with those in front of me who are climbing them at a normal speed. Or, horrors, going slowly. I don’t know why.

And I can’t stop. It’s an unfortunate side effect. Case in point: I once ran up a full fourteen flights of steps, because my friend and I didn’t want to wait for the elevator. I don’t know why guys always take steps two at a time (I feel too small to do that), but my friend was climbing them easily and quickly. I was racing to keep up with him. To say my thighs were killing me at the end was an understatement: I made him promise to never do that to me again. Next time, we’ll wait with all the other people for an elevator. Or at least, for mercy’s sake, walk. (The stairs also curved dramatically, lighthouse style. By the end of fourteen flights I was also dizzy and seriously reconsidering my appetite for lunch.)

He’s kept his word.

I love to see people smiling! Too many people walk around wearing their earbuds looking entirely serious. Whenever I see a person with a huge grin, it makes me smile too.

So go light the world up 🙂

It is a problem to me that you are smiling because your feet don’t hurt. Why do your feet hurt? Too many snazzy heels?

    Missing you!

Awww, Ellie! 🙂 That made my day!

Dana….er, yes. snazzy heels that are the only ones suitable for work (close-toed pumps) but have rather high arches. They hurt after awhile 😛 But what’s a girl to do when she wants to feel fabulous? (or wear pretty pants that are too long otherwise….heh)

    missing you more!
