and now i am here

And I’ve never done this before.

Never gotten lost on the way to classes – never walked to classes!

Never been surrounded by 30,000 other people before

Never had so many mentors and “ice-breaking sessions” in five days

Never worn a backpack

…and never even shared my room!

But beyond the getting lost part, and the homesick part, things are going well.  I love my roomie, and my dorm room is pretty cute.  I’m a bit overwhelmed with schedules and things I know I should be putting on my calender but can’t, for the life of me, remember what they are.  Hehe.  But I felt exceedingly smug that I did my reading for Wednesday’s English class literally half an hour after today’s finished.

I’m hoping all the schoolwork won’t kill me.

I’m wishing I had time to join all the awesome clubs I want to – The Navigators, Vole (the ballet company), Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Public Relations Student Society, THON groups (*major* thing on campus…there’s a gazillion different groups that all raise money to benefit pediatric research throughout the year, and then it culminates in a 46 hour dance marathon in the spring – last year we raised over $7.5 million!), theatre, a cappella or choir groups, the sign language organization – et cetera ad infinitum! 😉  I think the first two will definitely win for this semester; I may add Big Brothers Big Sisters if I think I can handle it.  I’m really good at overwhelming myself, lol!

So.  I’m learning that this. is. college.   Yikes! 😉

It’s kinda funny – there were two days in a row when I went to the dining hall by myself for a meal (either to meet up with someone, or just making a quick trip for some decent food while everyone else’s dinner consisted of carnival cotton candy), and I couldn’t figure out how to get to the proper entrance with the card swiper, because my menor had taken us a back way when it was especially busy, and of course the back way doesn’t have anyone stationed there.  So for two days in a row I’d go in, circle all the way around the dining hall until I found the guy stationed there, and pant, “One of these days I’ll figure out how I’m supposed to enter!  Until then, here’s my card.”  And of course, it was the same guy both times, which was pretty funny.  Thankfully, I’ve figured out how to enter now.  Although I still don’t know how to open my mailbox!  (Don’t worry – I’ll figure it out!)

And these are the bits and pieces that are making up my days right now.  I went to a fun pep rally last night, and have walked hours every day trying to orient myself.  (Yesterday alone I criss-crossed the campus tons of times for various things and wound up walking about three hours!)  I have also had the distinction of calling my mentor and wailing, “I’m lost!”

“Oh, okay.  Where are you?”

“By the daily collegian office?”

Yeah.  I’d managed to get two blocks downtown by accident.  Props for people who can get you back to where you belong!

And tomorrow I’m happy because three of my classes are like right next to each other.  Cake!

I have also had a terrible time trying to set up wireless (thankfully, we don’t get wireless in our rooms…and ethernet cables are comfortable friends), and have installed all kinds of crazy things and already been to see the help desk.  But I don’t think they start dealing with wireless issues until tomorrow.  (They were working on room connections over move-in week).  So off to ResCom I go tomorrow!  Providing I can find it.  You know, because I have no idea where it is.

I’m rambling badly, and I’ve got history pages to read and an RA and house meeting to attend in an hour, and maybe I’ll walk across to another dorm and check my mail.  Just in case I have something 🙂

So I’m off!
